Bible Study: I am God's Own Son - Part 1

Hi Everyone

We've started proper on the "Who I am in Jesus Christ" series and this is the first part, on who we are as God's sons.  When I say "sons" please understand that I refer to daughters as well.  Us guys are part of the bride of Christ too, after all!
I recommend downloading the audio to listen to to get the most of this Bible Study.  As you are blessed, do share this around with your friends!
Blessings!
Chris

Know Who You Are
Philemon 1:6 that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. (NKJV)
Our faith is effective when we acknowledge every good thing that is in us because of the finished work of Jesus.
Psalm 103: 1 A Psalm Of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (NKJV)
David blesses God for the work done in his life by God, praising Him and exhorting all to forget not all His benefits:  Forgiveness of sins, healing of diseases, redemption from destruction, God’s lovingkindness and His tender mercies.  We are satisfied with GOOD THINGS.
Paul puts it to the Corinthians this way:
1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. (NKJV)
The Spirit of God makes it such that we might know the things freely given to us by God.
We are Sons
If we are sons and God is our father, then we must consider carefully what it means to be a son.  How does God treat His children?  If we don’t understand this, we won’t understand how to be sons!
“The Prodigal Son”
For us to understand Sonship, a good place to begin is what is traditionally known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son.  Once you have gone through this teaching, I suspect you will find that the name of the parable as is common in Christiandom is actually not very accurate.
Luke 15:11 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood.
The younger son asks for the inheritance. A man can only give an inheritance when he is dead and gone, so the young man is really insulting his father, telling him he'd rather have him dead.
The man did not quarrel with his son, but instead divided HIS LIVELIHOOD - this is not spare cash the man had. It was his bread and butter. Such was the love of this man, so unquestioning. It also brings us to think about the largess of God and the unending riches He possesses.
Note also that he divided his livelihood to THEM i.e. the older son was also blessed here!
13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.
The younger son takes it all, goes off to a far country. He wanted to have NOTHING to do with his family. He didn't just spend the money on something silly nearby. He wanted his father to not know anything about the life he wanted to live. In effect, it wasn't just that he wasted money, but in fact, in spite of his father's kindness, he wanted to live a life in rebellion against what his father might have wanted. It was a willful and rebellious act.
14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.
Unlike his father, this young man wanted to do things HIS way but didn't know how. I don't think for one moment that he had planned to be broke. I think if he had the wisdom to make more money from what he had, he would gladly have done so. So 2 things appear here 1. He wanted to make it big ON HIS OWN but 2. He had little wisdom in himself to do this. This left him in a very bad state.
Hitting Rock Bottom
15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
He was now stranded in a far country and had no choice but to feed the worst things a Jew could imagine - PIGS! Would he have changed his thinking if he was feeding, say, sheep?
16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.
We might say this is terrible, but until we realize what we were made for, any life on earth is like a Jew among the pigs.  The greatest enemy of the Best is the good enough, because in this case, the good enough is so far from the best.  930 years of Adam’s life on earth in the flesh in the midst of the fall is NOTHING compared to eternity in the presence of Almighty God.
This man was so hungry that he would have eaten what the pigs ate - EWWW! That is where our own "righteousness" leaves us. We in ourselves don't even realise it but where we were before we were saved was like a Jew wanting to eat PIG FOOD! This is really the ROCK BOTTOM. BTW this is where we all are without the Lord, only that some of us haven't yet had the V17 experiences of coming to ourselves, much to our own peril.
David put it this way
Psalm 84:10 For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. (NASB95)
The Father wants much to save His people, but many have gotten used to the swine pit.
Realisation
17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
This was the only part of the story where we can give some credit to the son. Like him, it is only when we have realised our own terrible state, our so temporary and miserable lives on our own that we call upon the Lord. Life in the flesh is at best short and mean, no matter rich or poor, well or sick.  The faster we realize this, the better.
It was NOT because he was sorry about a moral wrong that he had committed - It was only for his stomach's sake, and the realisation of how much more even the servants HAD TO EAT than he had. He was not thinking about his father - he had only his own good in mind. God is so good to us that even when we come back to Him for our own needs, our satisfaction, He willingly accepts us wholly.  Taste and see, He invites.
Likewise, if there was no hell, and life was good, I doubt many of us would ever have a hunger for the Lord which is so instrinsic to a relationship with Him. Pro 1:7 , Ps 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.
Religion
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’
Man will attempt in his own way in his attempt to find meaning in the meaningless life of earth.  We think we need to serve God, become His slave or otherwise perform some sort of penance to regain His acceptance.  He did not understand the infinite mercy his father would show him. We likewise find it hard to plumb the depths of God's love for us, preferring to think that there must be something we can do to earn God's favour and His love for us. This is what the world calls “religious”.  Religion robs us of relationship for we relegate our status from sons to servants, even though God has made us sons.
Nothing but the blood of Jesus. We need to know that God is an infinitely good God who absolutely loves us.
Christianity ☺
20 “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

Two things the man did right.  1. He came back.  2.  He accepted the father’s love.
Throughout this whole episode, his father was scanning the horizon, looking out for the day when he would see his son, hoping against hope that he would return. That's why his father saw him while he was a great way off. What is the father's reaction? Not anger, but compassion. He RAN and fell on his neck. Mind you, sonny boy here didn't exactly smell of roses. And he did not even get a chance to kneel, grovel or snivel before him. He only got past half of what he had planned - he never got to tell of his plan to become a servant. Like for us, God doesn't really care what state we return to Him in or what we say or do. He only cares that we came back to him on our own free will.
Restoration to Sonship
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
Some people will talk about the father’s forgiveness of what the son did. No, the father did not even listen to the son's planned speech. He was more interested in RESTORING his son, to make him every bit like Himself, the Father, again!
Like the father, God's forgiveness was already completed in the Cross. God doesn't even have to judge or forgive anymore. In the light of Jesus' sacrifice for our sins, the only thing that mattered was that he showed up and received love.
The father was going to make the young man HIS SON again. It never changed. The older son tried to be a servant, but that, too was not what the father wanted. He wants sons. Sons do work for the father, they do serve, but that is in response to the father's goodness.
The Father is calling out loudly to his servants - bring out the finest robe. Jesus is the finest robe, for we are clothed in Christ.  Jesus is our Robe of Righteousness.  Our righteousness is TERRIBLE but we look good when clothed in Christ (Gal 3:26-27 ). God CANNOT wait to cover our shamefulness with His robe of righteousness.  The Father put the ring on his finger, signifying authority - this son was restored, once again acting his father's behalf.  He cannot wait to put authority back in our hands again.

23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.
Note that the father did not call for the celebration because his son was feeling sorry for what he had done. He did not say that his son who was a sinner now no longer sins, or that my son who did wrong has asked for forgiveness. No. the father was overjoyed for only one reason - the son he thought he had lost was found - the same son he ached nights over thinking he might be dead was, in fact, alive and here with him. God's greatest joy now is not to hear us grovel and snivel, not to wait to hear us confess. He only wants one thing, that we have a change of heart and learn that being with Him and Him alone is the best. All else does not matter.
What's important to note here is the extremely personal and intimate nature of Father God towards each of His people, every person who ever lived. The problem today is no longer sin, now that Jesus Christ had died for the sins of the world. Romans 5:6-8
The Older Son…
25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’
This other brother also did not understand sonship.  He approached his father from serving and law-keeping.  He represents the religious people, like the Pharisees. Even the servants had an idea of the father's heart, saying that his brother had returned safe and sound. But not for this guy...
The Angry Servant
28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’
He was angry and pouted, bitter with the father that his service and command keeping had not warranted more rewards. This man thought the father needed his service and law-keeping. It never occurred to him that all the father wanted was a relationship with him, that any service arises out of love (1 John 4:19), that like Adam, God wants relationship. He also needed to know that any service outside of love profits nothing. (1 Cor 13:1-3).

31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ” (NKJV)
At the end of the story, we see that both sons had a completely misconstrued idea of who the father really was. Of the two, we see that one did come to realise and enjoy the goodness of the father. Sinners that Jesus ate with came to Him and enjoyed His mercy.
Like good fruit comes from healthy trees, service to the Lord comes from a healthy relationship with Him.  The more we are nourished by His love, the more we love.
We Are His Sons
Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. (NKJV)
We were made into sons by the finished work of Jesus on the cross.  No longer are we servants, but have the privilege of enjoying personal relationships with God as His sons.
All This Because of the Cross
John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (NKJV)
1 Corinthians 2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (NKJV)
All these are benefits brought on us by grace, through the finished work of Jesus.  They are enjoyed through faith in the Word.
We will be seeing more of these in the coming weeks.  Stay tuned!

Bible Study: Who I am in Jesus Christ - An Introduction

Hi Everyone

Here's the latest Bible study, starting a whole series by the same name.  Do have a listen to the audio as well!

Blessings!

Who I am in Jesus Christ - An Introduction
Know (head) and Know (heart)

Acts 17:21 For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing. (NKJV)
We are not here to learn new things but to reinforce truths we have already heard.  We can learn head truths with no end, but only truths that become a part of us, that become our second nature that we perceive deep in our hearts will set us free (John 8:32).
1 John 2:7 Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. (NKJV)
John said in this passage above that there is no new commandment – the commandment remains the same, that we should love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34)!  We can only love as we have been loved (1 John 4:19) and this love causes us to have faith (Galatians 5:6, Ephesians 3:17-19)
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (NKJV)
To get into this, we take the step of faith and move by what He says.  The command is simple – seek Him, seek to know His love, knowing that He is a GOOD God.
Many people believe that God exists but most don’t believe that He is good beyond our thinking (Ephesians 3:20).  How good we know God to be to us will determine how much we can love our fellow man.  This in turn will determine how much the glory of God is reflected in us.  If we think He is an angry God, then we will reflect Him thus.  If we think He is good but cannot believe that He is that good for fear of turning back to sin, then we will never understand and enjoy His goodness and faithfulness.
Life in a half-way mode like that as a Christian is just plain miserable.  Either God is really infinitely good, the epitome of love modelled for us, or He is not.
Spirit-know is More Important
Knowing the Spirit realm is more important than knowing the physical realm.  This is like like what you see being more important than what you hear.
The most important part of you, the part that is like the image of God, is not in the realm of the 5 senses.  We cannot see God for He is spirit (John 4:24) and we are like Him in Spirit. If it was physical, Jesus would not have had to die on the Cross for us, because there are many people out there who are not Christians look physically much better than us!  These who do not have Jesus in their lives are spiritually dead, but not so for us.
Jesus has made us Spiritually alive.  This is the most important truth in the Gospel, more important that having all our sins forgiven, more important than “going to heaven”, now heaven has come to us in the form of the Holy Spirit, in our hearts as a seal!  The kingdom of God is here and spreading in the hearts of men!  We are the kingdom of Heaven and the Holy Spirit is ONE with each of us.  We were, however, not designed to dwell or operate alone.  Collectively, the people who are one with the spirit of God coming together is known as the church.
What is Truth to You Today?
What are some truths about you?  These are natural truths. (who you are, what you do, what you have, what problems you face etc.)  We need to know that is spiritual truths are the higher truths.
John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. (NKJV)
Spiritual Truths are the REAL Truths
What we will embark upon over the next few months will be about who we really are.  The most important part of us is the Spirit, and truths that are in the spirit are the real truths.
Truths in the physical realm are like sounds we hear.  They may be there, yes we do hear them, but no, they don’t represent reality.  I may hear a car coming behind me when I am cycling, but until I turn to look, I cannot necessarily confirm it.  We need to see in the Spirit.  We need to walk by faith.  Let’s look at the passage where this famous verse is found:
2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
This is the first spiritual truth for Christians! Not a Plan B as an alternative to life on here on the Earth but an infinitely better place.  When we fully grasp this truth, the only difference whether we live or die is that we really should much better want to be in Heaven with the Lord, but know that He has a will for my life here in the purpose of His Kingdom.  This is what Paul said, that to live is Christ, but to die is gain (Philippians 1:21).  The only purposes our lives have are Kingdom purposes and all other things that do not add to Kingdom purposes have no value.
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord.

We are working way below our potential while we are here in the flesh, but because we have the Holy Spirit we are confident, even though while in the flesh, it is not like being with the Lord by a LARGE margin.  This is what we see with our eyes but we have a solution to that:

7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. (NKJV)
Who We Are in the Spirit…
…is far more important than who we are in the flesh.
16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (NKJV)
As we know the love of God and who He has made us to be in the Spirit, we see each other as spirit beings, made in the image of God.  Yes, in the flesh, we have our imperfections, but we know that these are issues that need the renewal of the mind (Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:17-24).  As we encounter God in the Word daily (2 Corinthians 3:18) we are transformed from glory to glory and we do not lose heart, (2 Corinthians 4:16-18) knowing that the things we see are temporal, against the eternal nature of spiritual things.
We ALL are new creations.  Let’s allow spiritual truths replace physical truths in our minds, our souls, one truth at a time.
Spiritual Need is the Bigger Need
Every need we have stems from a spiritual need fulfilled in our Lord’s finished work that we have not realised.  If I have a fear of failure, I have not realised that I can do all things in Christ (Philippians 4:13).  If I worry about money it is because I don’t realise that Christ became poor that I might be rich (2 Corinthians 8:9), that He is able to make all grace abound, that we have sufficiency for every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8), a promise He had given in Matthew 6:33; our part is to seek the Kingdom.  This is why Paul said:
Galatians 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (NKJV)
When we understand that Spiritual needs have been met in Christ, we won’t fall prey to the needs of the flesh.
Ultimately, soul prosperity more important that body prosperity.  The flesh always wants every comfort and that alone can keep us discontented.  And discontentment always quickly leads to contentiousness.
When our souls are dominated by spiritual truths, when we are walking close to the Lord in the power of His promises in His Word, we prosper in all areas.
3 John 1:2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. (NKJV)
Spiritual Know Frees Us
This is where we enjoy true freedom.  Not in having everything the flesh needs, but in knowing that God loves us, that as we realise who we really are in Christ, in His love, we can deny ourselves to live in His completeness.
2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. (NKJV)
Situations may not change, but when we are renewed in His likeness, like great men in the Bible (Joseph, David, Paul, Our Lord Himself) we rise above the situations, because our purposes extend beyond our own fleshly needs.
So, Really, Just Who Are You?
Your identity in Christ is the single most important thing for life in the flesh.  This is Paul’s declaration of his identity in the flesh:
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (NKJV)
He lives by believing in who Christ says he is, because he (like all of us born-again) was purchased by the precious blood of Jesus.  He who freely gave us His Son, how will He not freely give us ALL things?
The Word says who you are in Christ.  We can preach it, teach it, but only when YOU start to take these truths and make them the very truths you live in, the ones that power your life, can they start to make a difference.  When we’re not just quoting another “Bible promise” but are realising that because of the precious blood of Jesus, He who loves us has opened this promise to us, made us who we really are.
This Year, I want for all of us to change our view of who we are, because of this finished work of Jesus.

Bible Study: Growing in Faith

Hi Everyone

Here is the latest Bible Study notes and the audio.

As usual, please do share them around as you are blessed.

Chris

We Need to be Walking by Faith
Really believe.  If the life you are living now does not require you to believe in God’s promises in His Word in any area to solve a problem in your life, then you are either:

  1. Dead
  2. Not growing in the Lord

What may be known as an Unbelieving Believer.
Trials are Testing for Faith
James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. (NKJV)
Trials are chances to test out God’s Word.  This active – we can use the trial to put our faith to test, or we can choose to ignore the Word.
Every trial has a promise from God.
Not There But OTW (On The Way)
Philippians 3:11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. (NKJV)
We talked about our goal in becoming like Christ.  We will always be going after it this side of heaven, but we must never stop.
Stand still and you go backwards.
God’s Word: The Standard for Belief
Not Experience.  If we “aren't there” (we never are), if our lives don’t seem to line up with the promises of God, it doesn't mean that the Word of God is not true.  It simply means we need to seek Him more.  This is the walk of faith.  God’s Word is true.
Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? 4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged.” (NKJV)
Head Knowledge  Believing
Truths we know – perceive deep in us, that become part of our persona, are the ones that set us free.
John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (NKJV)
Example:
We all have heard to work that we have something to give.
Ephesians 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. (NKJV)
How many of us work that way?
“Man, I have to get to work, so that I will have something to give!”
More to Just “Believing in God”
James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? (NKJV)
Faith requires action.  It requires a decision to believe what God said versus what we see.  It requires us to disbelieve what we sense (the flesh) and believe the Word.  This belief is seen in our action, the work of faith.
KnowDo, DoKnow
It’s not about going out and doing good to all, nor living by “Christian values”.  We do not do things to gain God’s favour or blessings.
We realise who we have been saved to be and act according to this.
Daniel 11:32b the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. (NKJV)
It is about acting out in faith what God has promised in His Word.  It is in believing Him when He tells us who we are and what we are entitled to because of the finished work of Jesus.
It is about walking life by faith in the Word, walking in the Spirit.
Know as I am Known
We act out of who we are – dogs bark, cats meow, cows moo.  Kings reign, sons of God speak to mountains.
How does God see me today?  He sees in the Spirit.  Who are we in the Spirit?  What does the mirror of the Word say?
We see dimly – He sees clearly.  He sees His glory in us.  He sees us IN CHRIST.
1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. (NKJV)
As we keep looking at the mirror of the Word, we will know more and more and be transformed from glory to glory.
Know and Trust because of Jesus’ Love
Jesus came on earth, lived as a man, died and rose to win these promises, to make us who we are.  The finished work of the cross was all because of love.
Faith works by love
Galatians 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. (NKJV)

So we have to be rooted and grounded in His love
Ephesians 3:17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (NKJV)
Humble Youself, Trust Him
Humble yourself under God, under His Word.
1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (NKJV)
Why cast ALL your cares?  Because He cares for ALL your cares.  What are you standing in faith for today?  He knows and takes care of all your cares.
Like children growing up, as we grow in Christ, things that were cares become less and less of cares.  This is true freedom. (Like the lives of Joseph, Paul etc.)
Pray Out Scriptures
Scriptures are God’s Word to us.  Thank God for who we are in Christ.  Pray the prayer of faith.
James 5:15a And the prayer of faith will save the sick, (NKJV)
Not the prayer of fear, panic or the prayer of try-and-see.
Steps to Belief
  • Can’t know what you haven’t heard or read (Rom 10:17) - Read the Word!
  • Can’t understand, gain wisdom (renew mind) from what you haven’t spent time meditating on (Josh 1:8, Ps 1, Col 3:16) - Meditate on the Word!
  • Can’t believe whom you cannot trust (Ps 3:5-6, 1 John 4:8, 1 John 4:19) - Trust God in His Word - they are His promises to you!
  • Can’t perceive what you haven’t tried out (James 1:2, Ps 34:8) - Try it out, one step at a time!

Isaiah 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.” (NKJV)

What are you standing on God’s Word for today?

Bible Study: Thanksgiving, Purpose, Hope, Worship

Hi Everyone

Here's the notes and the audio for last Friday's Bible Study.  Let's give heed to the Word, what we have heard.
Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. (NKJV)

Blessings!

Chris

Thanksgiving

Scripture tells us
Psalm 100:4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. (NKJV)

Why? Because He IS good!
Psalm 100:5 For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations. (NKJV)
We have Plenty to be thankful for – life, family, friends, job, earthly comforts

How We See God

Our concept of God matters a lot, especially in our thanksgiving.
  • “I hate sin.  I’ve forgiven your sins, but if you do enough of it again, you will be judged.”
  • “You are forgiven – change your sinful ways and I will be pleased with you.”
  • “You are forgiven – worship me and serve me and I will bless you.”
  • “My Child, I am SO happy to be one with you!  You will never understand how much I love you and want to have fellowship, be one with you!  Let me lead you and guide you into everything that my Son died to win for you, that I might restore you once again, spirit, soul and body, into my image.”
Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (NKJV)

The Biggest Thanks is For…

God sending us His Holy Spirit because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross.  Having the Spirit in us makes ALL the difference. His Forever one with us!
This in itself is the most amazing thought, the one that we should be thankful for, for all of eternity.  This is why Christ came and died for us, that He Himself might be united as one with us.  We are already ONE with Him in the Spirit realm, which is the REAL realm.
1 Corinthians 6:17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. (NKJV)
We are giants in the spiritual realm. The devil is the miserable little one.  But until we are convinced about that, we will continue to be fooled.
As we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, the Word will guide us and make us more and more like Jesus.  The Word is living and is inseparable from the Spirit.  That’s why it is called walking by faith (1 Cor 4:7) in the Word is walking in the Spirit.
Galatians 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (NKJV)

So This is the Purpose

1 Peter 1:8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls. (NKJV)
Now that you are saved, the end product of the salvation here on earth is the salvation of your soul, the renewing of your mind, that you might become more and more like Him.
We are but cold, dark moons without the Son.  Unless we bask in the glory of the Son, we won’t reflect any glory like a real moon would.  You can’t become like someone you don’t know.
2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. (NKJV)
God has at the same time made each of us unique – we have a calling in our lives, that is manifested as we conform to the image of Christ.
It won’t happen without us knowing Him in the Word.

Fool Me Once…

It’s the same old dirty trick; of making those made in the Image of God believe that they are something less than the truth, the very image of God.  He did that to Adam and Eve, making them think that perhaps God had withheld something from them, that they were not fully made in the image of God:
Genesis 3:5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (NKJV)
Truth is, they were made in the image of God and already had all they needed.
Fast-forward 4000 years later, with our Lord Jesus in the wilderness being tempted by the devil:
Matthew 4:3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” (NKJV)
The question wasn't so much one of His ability but of His identity.  The attacks invariably are not on our actions, but our identity, for from our identity will come our actions.
If the devil can make us doubt our sonship, what Christ had died to obtain for us, he will steal the power that comes with it.
Jesus showed us how in the power of the Holy Spirit, we are like Him.
John 14:12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. (NKJV)
He even commissioned us to take over His role on earth:
John 20:21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” (NKJV)
We can’t do what He has done unless we are empowered the way He was.  And we are.  We have the same Holy Spirit and He lived His life here showing how a man submitted to the Holy Spirit lived.
The early CHRIST-ians turned the known world then right-side-up, for they were witnesses who moved in the power of the Holy Spirit, truly as ambassadors for Christ.  Jesus gave us His authority when He said:
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (NKJV)
And guess what?  The old liar was back at it and has managed to convince much of the church of Christians made in the image of God that we don’t have the power of God in us to live out our lives.  We have the Holy Spirit, like Jesus but many are powerless, living lives of defeat, like princes not knowing their true nature and eating out of dumpsters.

Worship Him in the Spirit

As we begin to grasp the entire magnitude of this truth in the coming year, we will have so much more to thank and worship Him for this year.
Worship in Spirit and in Truth – worship knowing who we truly are in Jesus Christ, according to the Word of Truth.
John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (NKJV)
We can be so used to the intellectual pursuit of Christ, that we miss the very heartbeat of the Lord, which is His love, His deep, deep love for His creation.  We must never ever study or meditate on the Word without this, because when we do, Christianity can quickly be reduced to a religion, a set of doctrines.  At worst, it can even be a cause.
Let's get into the Word, but not for an intellectual.  Let’s really experience Him, His love for us.

The Take-Away

Let’s encounter God in His Word daily
Let’s be transformed from glory to glory to be like Him
Let’s rejoice and glory in this
Let’s be thankful all this was made possible by the blood of Christ
Let’s praise Him
